When it comes to makeup I’m definitely a beginner with a lot to learn, usually when going out with friends my face is passed around the group so that they can do my eye makeup and contouring (and fix whatever mistakes that I’ve made along the way). However, when it comes to a simple, classic, everyday makeup look I like to think that I’m a bit more skilled and experienced. I’ve been wearing makeup since I was around 11 so I’ve been through my fair share of bad face days, patchy foundation, dodgy eyebrows and spider leg mascara, but over the years I’ve learnt a lot and more importantly I’ve tried out hundreds of makeup products I’m pretty good at separating the beautiful from the plain rubbish. These are my top five makeup staples that my everyday makeup bag couldn’t survive without:
Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer
The best drug store concealer available! Collection Lasting Perfection is creamy and lightweight but doesn’t compromise on coverage. It’s particularly good for hiding dark under eyes, blemishes, and shaping brows and (as it says on the tin) lasts all day long without budging. It comes in ten shades and caters to my pale freckly skin perfectly, however my only criticism would be that the majority of shades suit a paler skin tone, with only 2-3 shades that would suit darker skin.
Better than Sex Mascara
Wow does this mascara live up to its name! Too Faced, Better than Sex Mascara is my absolute favourite item of makeup that I’d happily buy over and over again. It’s really versatile and can be worn for any occasion because it’s so easy to layer and never clumps, so a light layer can be used for everyday wear, and it can be built up to create a false lash effect for parties and going out. I find that it gives my eyelashes the perfect colour, length and thickness every time and the wand shape is brilliant for ensuring that my inner lashes are shorter and thinner and that my outer lashes are long and full. Its only downfall is the price: a tube is £19 and usually only lasts me around two months so it is a bit pricey, however in terms of quality I think that it’s definitely worth every penny!
Revolution Eyebrow Pomade
This is a relatively new discovery for me but I’m in love already. I’ve always been a devoted Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow user, but two weeks ago I ran out and didn’t have the money (or time, they only ship from America after all), to buy a new one, so my friend recommended this Revolution dupe. I’ve tried many a cheap dipbrow and been disappointed 9/10 times, so I really wasn’t expecting much, but when I tried it I was pleasantly surprised! The texture is perfect, creamy enough so that it blends easily, but not too creamy that you can’t outline and shape your brows with it, and they even do the perfect shade for me! (as a ginger, finding eyebrow products is a struggle!). The best bit is, at only £6 it is the perfect alternative to the pricey Anastasia Dipbrow and I would 100% recommend.
No7 Perfect Light Loose Powder
Translucent powder is a huge makeup bag necessity because it can be used for so many things! I love this No7 powder because it is great for setting under eye concealer and baking but can also make your face look less oily and shiny without feeling too heavy. Of the powders that I’ve tried this is definitely the best!
Velvet Teddy Lipstick
An absolute classic! No makeup bag is complete without Mac’s Velvet Teddy, it’s the perfect pinky shade and matte look to use with both every day and going out makeup looks, and it suits a wide range of skin tones. It’s creamy and doesn’t feel too heavy on your lips: once it’s on you can barely feel it. I would recommend using a lip balm before applying it, as the matte effect can dry out your lips pretty quickly.
